What is GARRA?

Garra (Ga-ha) means grit, firmness of character; indomitable spirit. A woman with garra has passion, perseverance, and resilience. We believe all women and immigrant women, in particular, have the grit to survive and succeed in a city like New York. Our team is here to provide those Brazilian immigrant women with the resources and tools to make an impact in their lives and in their communities through a number of programs.

Our Plan

Our strategic plan focuses on developing leadership and harnessing the power of Brazilian immigrant women. By investing in women, we see an improvement in their immediate family and as their social circle. Our programs help immigrants heal the trauma of family separation, discrimination, and abuse through artistic expression, find their voice through leadership development, and empower others in their community. It will guide the immigrant woman to define her own narrative and bring the humanity of immigrants into the center of the policy debate.

Our staff and volunteers are compiled of fellow Brazilian immigrant women filled with passion and grit, that can relate to the experiences of leaving our home and finding a community abroad.
